Your information
Cookie Policy
This page lists every cookie Social Universe sets and what the site keeps in your browser, and why. We do not use advertising, tracking or analytics cookies.
Beta version — last updated 30 October 2026. Social Universe is in public beta. This page describes how the service works today. Some points are still under legal review: each is marked “Under legal review” and says how to reach us until it is completed. The text may change; each new version is published here with its date.
English is the source version of this page. It will be translated only after the English text has been approved.
Cookies we set
nkw_sid: the sign-in cookie. It keeps you signed in to the members area. It holds a random code, is not readable by scripts on the page, is sent only over a secure connection on the live site and only to Social Universe. It lasts until you sign out, or 30 days by default for members; a sign-in opened from the Control Center ends with that Control Center session.
su_asf: a sign-up safety cookie. If the sign-up refuses an age, this cookie stops the age from being typed again in the same browser for one day. It holds only the value “1”.
su_h4cc: a temporary security cookie. After a security change we may ask your browser once to clear the site files it has saved; this cookie, which holds only “1”, remembers for 8 days that this was done, so it is not repeated.
Cookies we do not use
Social Universe itself sets no advertising cookies, no tracking cookies and no analytics or visitor-counting cookies, on the public pages or in the members area. Whether services that supply code to some pages set cookies of their own is covered under “Other services” below.
What the site keeps in your browser
Besides cookies, the members app and the Control Center keep a few things in your browser’s own storage. They stay on your device and are not sent to us:
Preferences: light or dark theme, language, sounds, data saver, the feed tab you last used, which menus you opened, tips you closed and whether you were already asked to install the app.
Secure chat: your end-to-end encryption keys and your decrypted messages are kept in an encrypted store in this browser so that only you can read them.
Offline use: copies of pages and files, so the app opens quickly and works when you are offline. Copies tied to your account are cleared when you sign out.
Control Center (staff only): the staff sign-in is kept in the browser tab’s session storage, not in a cookie, and ends when the tab is closed or the staff member signs out.
Other services
Share, map and calendar buttons (for example to share an event or open its place on a map) only open another website when you press them. The Control Center, which only staff use, loads some program libraries from public code servers (cdnjs.cloudflare.com and unpkg.com); like any web server, they receive the address of the computer that asks for the files.
Under legal review: whether these code servers set cookies of their own and whether they must be named as recipients of that address. This only concerns staff using the Control Center; until the review is complete, ask any question through the contact form (/contact/).
Your choices
You can delete cookies and site data in your browser settings at any time. If you delete the sign-in cookie, you are signed out. Blocking all cookies stops you from signing in.
Every cookie and storage item on this page is needed for the site to work or keeps a preference you set yourself, which is why we do not show a cookie banner.
Under legal review: confirmation that no consent banner is needed under the Nigeria Data Protection Act and, for visitors in the EU, the ePrivacy rules and the GDPR. Until the review is complete, ask any question through the contact form (/contact/), topic “Privacy and my data”.
Changes to this policy
When the cookies or the browser storage change, this page is updated with its date. Beta version, last updated 30 October 2026.
